Professional Experience

 

As a chemist, I have not only excelled within academia but also within professional organizations and the community. I have been a visionary and trustworthy leader. An as ACS volunteer for 42 years, my volunteer service, passion, and commitment have been demonstrated by my leadership positions in various capacities. I served on the board of directors of the American Chemical Society (2013-2021) and now serving on the Board of Directors of SACNAS. I have demonstrated my commitment to work closely with students as a 32 years Student Chapter’s Faculty Adviser, with volunteers in the USA and many other countries to communicate the value of chemistry as the Founder of the very successful Chemistry Festival outreach program and Co-Founder of the Spanish webinar series. I have been an international networking facilitator, working to engage with and support thousands of national and international volunteers. I have established strategic relationships with many partner international and national societies.

As a researcher, together with my students, I have made more than three hundred presentations. I have been a special guest at various conferences in the United States, Puerto Rico, and other countries. I have also received several awards as a Fellow from the American Chemical Society and the International Society of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC. In 2020, I was selected as one of the 100 inspiring Hispanic /Latinx scientists in America and also received the highest recognition of the Puerto Rico Chemist Association “Dr. Osvaldo Ramírez-Toro Award”. In 2017, was selected as one of the twelve IUPAC 2017 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering of the world. In 2012 received the ACS Volunteer Service Award, since 2013, Honorary Member, Golden Key International Honour Society, and has received many recognitions In Puerto Rico, the USA, and internationally.

  • Founder, developer and implementer of the Festival de la Química for the American Chemical Society
    • The “FESTIVAL DE QUÍMICA” is a community outreach event that, through demonstrations, emphasizes the importance of chemistry in daily life. The event was initially designed, developed and implemented in Puerto Rico, but since 2010 ACS adopted this model to broader its impact internationally.
  • Project SEED Program Coordinator
    • In 2011 the Project SEED was implemented in Puerto Rico at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Since then I have been coordinating it. This program has been very successful, winning the ChemLuminary Award in 2016.
  • Co-founder and Coordinator of ACS Spanish Language Webinars Series Program
    • A series of webinars in Spanish on different topics related to chemistry with the collaboration of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Dr. Lena Ruiz Azuara of the Chemical Society of Mexico, and Bibiana Campos Seijo, Editor-in-Chief and VP of C&EN Media Group.

    • Representative of the ACS at the 2011 IUPAC World Chemistry Congress Organizing Committee. The Colegio de Químicos de Puerto Rico hosted the 43rd IUPAC World Chemistry Congress (IUPAC 2011).This meeting was part of the events of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC). The meeting theme was “Chemistry Bridging Innovation Among the Americas and the World”.
  • PI/Organizer “Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering” Project
    • This project was established in 2011 to acknowledge and promote the work of women chemists/chemical engineers worldwide based on their excellence in basic or applied research, distinguished accomplishments in teaching or education, or demonstrated leadership or managerial excellence in the chemical sciences.
  • International Year of Chemistry (IYC), Puerto Rico Section Chair
    • ACS Theme Team Chair for the International Year of Chemistry Celebration, 2011.
  • South East Regional Meeting General Chair
    • The 2009 Southeast Regional Meeting of the ACS (SERMACS 2009) was held October 21-24 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, San Juan. Some 1,338 participants attended oral and poster technical sessions that focused on topics from across the discipline. A variety of special events were held, including plenary addresses, an exposition, luncheons, dinners and receptions, student-focused events, and the National Chemistry Week celebration, which attracted more than 500 additional participants. Feedback from attendees through a post-conference survey indicates a high level of satisfaction with the event.
